modern + natural landscapes inspired by nature.

Every project is approached with passion and care. We are increasingly drawn towards undefined spaces that blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. We will always attempt to work with a soft hand and find the delicate balance between control and the wild.

Established in 2000, the business has grown over the years into a productive design studio. We are a small team of professional and committed designers who have gained a wealth of experience over the years. We are proud to work with great architects, landscapers and other professionals to ensure that each project is designed and detailed from all aspects considered.

About us

Nicholas Dexter has designed gardens for the past 20 years. His focus has always been to create simple, uncomplicated spaces that connect people to nature. He studied geology at the University of Manchester, developing his passion for wild, rugged landscapes and the calm they bring. Studying landform provided the perfect foundation for his career in designing gardens. In 2005, he became a Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers (MSGD), the industry's professional body.

Between 2006-2013 he designed gardens at Hampton Court and Chelsea Flower Show, which provided a platform to experiment and create more conceptual outdoor spaces.

Nicholas Dexter regularly lectures at the KLC School of Design. He sits on the Mid Sussex Design Review Panel, providing feedback on planning applications from a landscape perspective.

PLANTING

Process: Landscape design from Concept to Completion

1

A : BRIEF

The initial meeting allows us to access the site and agree the aims of the project. We sketch ideas and select photos that capture the key features.
2

B : SURVEY

A topographic survey (and architectural drawings) are needed to complete our work.
3

C1 : CONCEPT

Concept drawings include layout plans, 3D visuals and mood board images to illustrate the landscape proposal.
4

C2 : DEVELOPED DESIGN

Additional detail is added for planning submissions.
5

D : DETAILED DESIGN

The technical stage explores how the proposed landscape will be built. This includes setting out plans with specification of all bespoke elements, hardscape layouts, edges, interfaces, drainage, levels, external lighting, sections and elevations.

6

Stage E : PLANTING

The planting plan indicates the positioning of new trees and plants. A spreadsheet schedule lists the size, spacing, quantity and price of all new plants.

7

F : TENDERING

The detailed design plans and quantity schedules provide information for landscape contractors to price from. This sometimes includes site visits to introduce the project and evaluate returned costs.
8

G : CONSTRUCTION

We provide a monitoring service to oversee the work and ensure that the design is implemented correctly during the construction phase.
Frequently Asked Questions

Locations covered:
Although our office is located in Brighton we can design landscapes in any location across the UK or Overseas. Simply call or email and we can discuss your project.

Design Style:
Each project is different depending on the architecture and location. We design simple spaces that combine natural materials such as stone, timber, rocks, gravel and, of course, plants.

How much does landscape design cost?
All fees are referenced to the Society of Garden Designers fee guidance calculator, which is roughly 10% of the overall build cost. The design fee is broken down into stages which are outlined below. Generally, projects have a minimum build cost of £40k but it's probably better to speak to us if the budget is tight.

Initial consultations:
We can either visit the garden or arrange a Zoom call to offer advice and provide a fee proposal.

Standalone Planting Design:
In some cases gardens can be transformed by re-planting.  Feel free to send us photos of your project and we will get back to you. Planting areas need to be greater than 50m2.

We source and supply our plants for your landscape design project. The prices we offer are generally much lower than typical online suppliers.

Planning Applications:
We work closely with Architects, Arborculturalists, Exterior Lighting designers, Ecologists and Transport consultants to produce comprehensive planning application packages.

Work within the South Downs National Park (SDNP) generally requires a Landscape-Led approach to all new build projects. In these situations we team up with Landscape Visual to provide LVIA's.
